Roadtrip 2015 :
Woodstock NY, Charleston SC, Carabelle Beach Fla. to Cedar Key Fla. via the scenic route 98.
Woodstock / Saugerties NY
We left Dunham a bit late because the connector for the brakes and lights in the box of the truck didn't work, fortunatly the original connector on the back bumper did work. We are in no rush anyways since the destination for the day Woodstock NY site of the 1969 concert is only 400 km. a 5 to 6 hour drive including dog stops and lunch.
The first leg took us from Dunham to the south end of Lake George NY passing trough Vermont on small roads trough small towns and taking it easy. The second leg is the rest of the drive on the NY state thruway to destination.
During my stay in the region we visited the Culinary Institute of America AKA The CIA. Located on the shore of the Hudson river .
As a former teacher in professional cooking the visit was very interesting, we didn't have supper at the Escofier restaurant, we needed reservations and we didn't have any. |
The combination of a warm september and being 400km south, made the forest in full colors even in november. I took a few pictures for sure.
On the left the Marist Brothers Center in Esopus across the Hudson river with the pocono mountains in the background. The picture was taken from the grounds of the Vanderbilt mansion in Hyde Park NY. |
Charleston South Carolina
to put the bolt back in Our next stoop was Charleston in South-Carolina, were we would be staying a week before continuing to go south. We had to stop on the way so we decided to stay in Gettysburg for the night, it was the Halloween week-end so the place was full and alive. The next day on the way out I took a curve in a hill to tight and broke a big bolt on the hitch, so we had to stop in a parking lot and I was able to put the broken bolt back in place, I later got a new bolt sent by fedex to Charleston. from Gettysburg to our next stop somewhere in the Carolinas there was a lot of rain.
I had been to Charleston before so I had visited a lots of the attractions and I had the list of the places I planned to see and photograph.

The Angel Oak is a 1500 Year Old Live Oak the biggest tree east of the Mississippi. It's located on James Island on the south side of Charleston.
Some plantations are opened for visitors, some are left as is not restored or furnished and others are fully restored and furnished. This one Magnolia Plantation is at the extreme of the scale including the gardens and even an Adubon Swamp. if you take the whole package it's a bit expensive. This was my second visit so I took a ticket for the Adubon Swamp and walking the grounds and gardens.
Carabelle Beach Fla.
Our first Florida destination is Carrabelle Beach, a little known beach on scenic road 98 on the north shore of the Gulf of Mexico. A perfect place to stop and relax for a week.
St-George Island, a sandbar in the Gulf of Mexico. One of the nice Florida State Parks.
There were a lot of butterflies, I took a few pictures
Here's one of an osprey with it's lunch
Last sunset on the beach, tomorrow we hit the road.
Cedar Key Fla.
In the old days they had built a railroad that could transport goods from Jacksonville on the Atlantic coast of Florida to Cedar Key a small port on the Gulf coast of Florida. With a lot of it's 19th century buildings still standing it looks as time stopped. It's a nice place to visits.
The old marina of Cedar Key
The boardwalk that leads to the river
|
As often the case on the side of the water there is plenty of birds to photograph.
I took a trail to see the Suwanee river, the part of the trail that passed over swamps was a boardwalk it's always easier but you must beware of spiders rather then passing face first trough a web. Here they tend to be nasty. |
